The Chore Allowance Debate Is Finally Settled

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share this with you.

Here is an article I just posted on my Allowance Secrets Blog.

Enjoy!

The chore allowance debate is finally settled. Have you heard about this yet? It’s a debate that has been going on for many years. A very heated, strongly debated topic with diverse opinions. Want to know how it was settled?

Oh, but before telling you about how it was settled, I want to tell you what this debate was all about (in case you’ve been living on another planet all these years). I’m kidding! Seriously, though, you might not be fully up to speed. Ready?

The chore allowance debate is about combining chores with the giving of allowances. On one side, we have those who believe allowances should be given to children in payment for doing their chores.

On the other side, we have those who believe allowances should be “just given.“ After all, children do need money too. Any and all chores asked of children, however, must be their responsibility and no payment is required.

As you can imagine, everyone had opinions and sides were easily, if heavily, formed on each side of this debate. I then realized that I couldn’t participate in the chore allowance debate. Why is that? I’ll tell you. ;o)

I don’t believe in allowances at all! What I do believe in is entrepreneurial skills and creative thinking. I want to foster financial independence by helping kids find kid-friendly, creative ways to make money. Money should be earned, not given.

What’s more, I do believe in paying for extraordinary and unusual chores asked of children. Those ordinary and usual chores children are asked to do are because they are in a family unit. All family members need to be responsible for assigned chores. This view may not have been part of the chore allowance debate; however, I believe this point of view is also relevant.

I’m digressing. Let’s get back to the chore allowance debate. I’ve explained it the best way I can. Before making up your mind, however, and before I tell you how this debate was settled, you may want to read what others had to say.

Have a look at this ebook “Allowance Secrets: To Give or Not To Give” where the top 25 “kids and money” experts, family coaches, and highly successful entrepreneurs share their personal opinions and tips on whether or not to give your children an allowance. They also discuss paying or not paying for chores.

So, the chore allowance debate has been settled. What a relief! ;o)
And the envelope please …

Everyone can make their own decisions. Everyone is to be accountable for those decisions and not inflict their decisions on others. After all, we are a society “FREE to be you and me” (to quote Marlo Thomas, daughter of Danny Thomas). Now, you’re really not surprised with this outcome, are you? ;o)

Listen, no matter what side of the chore allowance debate you end up on (and don’t forget to include my viewpoint!), it’s important that children learn to manage their own money. Learning how to create income, invest it, give some away and make their money work hard for them not work hard for their money are important attributes for all our children to acquire.

Let’s hear it for settling the chore allowance debate and empowering children to be money savvy young adults!
