Fun Cake Decorating Ideas – Specialty Cakes – Diaper Cake

Hi everyone, I just wanted to share this article with you.

I just posted this on my Fun Cake Decorating Ideas Blog.

Enjoy!

Diaper CakeThis is not your typical diaper cake. Usually people associate a diaper cake with a “cake” made of stacked up diapers for new-borns.

A friend of mine, Heather, was expecting her tenth child. Heather has a passion for crafts and especially making her own diapers or as we would say in New Zealand, nappies.
So I suppose I could call this a nappie cake as well. Now that we have been in Canada for a while, I use both words in conversation, depending on who I talk to.

It was quite funny how we met, we first met at a home schooling conference in our home town, then we met each other again at ante-natal classes, when she was pregnant with her 9th child and later we met again at the property investors group in our home town.
We just had too much in common not to become friends.

Heather and her husband are, just like us, both home schooling parents and property investors. Their youngest four kids (this includes nr. 10) have come to our place for sleepovers quite often and our kids have been to their place for sleepovers often as well.

Heather did not use any of your store-bought-throw-away diapers, so a so called diaper cake would not have been very appropriate. That is why I decided to make this REAL cake ;0)

The nappies or diapers Heather makes are all reusable and she loves to use cool patterns. For my cake I choose flower patterns, mainly because it looks pretty and I happened to have various flower cookie cutters. The cake is my favourite sponge cake and it is covered with marshmallow fondant that I made myself.

When you look closely at the cake, you will see that I even detailed the snaps that Heather uses to close the nappie and it is made to grow, just like the real ones. I even include the label that Heather puts on her nappies as well.

Heather was very pleased and surprised with the cake. The rest of the family loved it as well. Now, most of the readers may wonder was it a boy or a girl?

Heather’s tenth and last child was a girl and she is now almost 5 years old already, time flies doesn’t it?
